Sorry, there was a problem saving your cookie preferences. The lady has never looked better, and while the drydock sequences may seem like overkill to some, the effects and Goldsmith’s music really pulls them together, with the score itself being the best part of the film, bar none. After the reunion of her crew and a tour of the refitted Enterprise, 23rd century civilisation as we know it is threatened by a fiendish Thingy annihilating all in its path. It seems to reach indefinitely in all directions, the Enterprise is a mere speck inside of it, and the contents of the alien vessel include images of the stars and planets it has passed en route, as well as enormous rooms or spaces that seem to be states of a computer-mind. A aventura humana está apenas começando... O livro definitivo sobre a produção do primeiro filme da série Jornada nas Estrelas para o cinema.

Not as much humour as The Voyage Home.

Exciting and spectacular movie that originates the continued series cinema. Two unflattering nicknames were born: Star Trek - The Motionless Picture and Star Trek - The Motion Sickness. It’s worth noting that this is apparently the theatrical version because the Director’s Edition was only rendered at 420p i.e. It’s cute, but a bit of fluff, really. Still, the film is a pretty ponderous spectacle. Great book, with some unseen images and detail on the production, but I was expecting it to be more in depth - I read it in a single sitting as its much more a coffee table book kind of thing. The pain of Star Trek: The Motion Picture can be lessened by listening to "The Blue Danube" waltz (a la 2001: A Space Odyssey) during the laboriously long segments showing the Starship Enterprise.

It lacks the dazzling brilliance and originality of 2001 (which was an extraordinary one-of-a-kind film). Nor is this exactly Douglas Trumbull's finest two hours of special effects — they look decidedly tacky compared to those in Star Wars two years earlier, and positively prehistoric now. But for a thirty year old film that wasn’t ever properly finished, it looks fantastic.

It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness. This movie, instead, is dedicated to true Star Trek fans.

It lacks the dazzling brilliance and originality of 2001 (which was an extraordinary one-of-a-kind film). After years deskbound as an admiral in Starfleet, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE begins with James T. Kirk (William Shatner) reassuming command of the starship Enterprise, just refurbished with the latest gear and weaponry.

The Enterprise's first feature, with smarts outdoing guns.

When I was younger I thought this one was even worse than Star Trek V, because as bad as "The Final Frontier" was, at least it had some action and colour. For example, if Kirk comes on screen, you can click on the Kirk bit and it’ll tell you what he’s been up to. Obviously, Paramount weren’t big fans of future-proofing.

Roddenberry was always an "okay" storyteller, but saddled with themes and ideas that might have been a step ahead of most audiences likings. After making a meal out of a few Klingons and the odd space station, a vast and malevolent cloud is on its way towards our home planet with some very dodgy intentions, and there’s only one thing standing between Earth and certain doom: the starship Enterprise. And scenes dealing with the Enterprise and the other ship will make up most of the movie if the special effects aren't good, the movie's not going to work. On Blu-ray, the film generally looks fantastic. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2020. But they are good, as, indeed, they should be: The first special-effects team on this movie was fired, and the film's release was delayed a year while these new effects were devised and photographed. Parents need to know that Star Trek: The Motion Picture features sci-fi violence, including the implication of death, and some intense moments amped up by music. The audience walks in with a possessive, even patronizing attitude toward Kirk and Spock and Bones, and that interferes with the creation of the "sense of wonder" that science fiction is all about. Star Trek: The Motion Picture has its unique place in cinema history as probably the first television series to get a big screen motion picture. And he makes a fair crack at it, but the script and the focus of the film lets it down. And with the Blu-ray the closest way to revisiting it on the big screen, hopefully it might get a little more of the respect it deserves.
